Menemen is a delicious Turkish egg dish that can be considered the easiest dish of Turkish Cuisine. We love to eat this delicious Menemen dish at breakfasts, lunches, and even dinners. It may seem like an omelette to you from the photos, but I assure you that it is much more than an omelette.

You may ask yourself that how can an egg dish can be that yummy. Let me tell you that it is not all about the eggs; it is about the harmony of the ingredients with the eggs. Menemen is a dish that is simply made with eggs, fresh tomatoes, fresh green peppers, garlic, onion, ground black pepper, and red hot chili pepper flakes.

In a perfect Menemen dish; you don’t feel any dominant taste. That’s why I mention the harmony word as above. You need to be precise while you are preparing the ingredients of this dish. Otherwise, you can change the overall taste.

Besides its superior taste, Menemen dish has a very strong characteristic that none of the other dishes have. It unites people from all levels of income because of its affordable, common, and simple ingredients. In Turkey, everyone loves to eat it from rich to poor. It is considered as Every man’s dish.

How to eat Menemen?

We cannot think of eating it without bread. Bread is the wingman of Menemen. I strongly recommend you to keep a Baguette bread ready at aside before you start to make this dish. If you want to eat Menemen dish like our way, you need to forget about using the fork and knife. We love to eat this dish directly from the inside of the pan. If you are the only person who is going to eat it, just give it a try to eat it this way. Use a piece of Baguette bread as a scoop. It is the best and fun way to eat this simple but delicious dish.

Ingredients

  • 6 eggs
  • 3 tbsp olive oil
  • 3 cups tomatoes chopped
  • 3 green peppers chopped
  • 1 onion chopped
  • 3 clove garlic thin sliced
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon red hot chili pepper flakes

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a pan. Add in chopped onion, green peppers, garlic slices and saute until onions get soften. 

  2. Add the chopped tomatoes and salt to the mix and simmer all for about 3 minutes with stirring frequently until tomatoes soften.

  3. Break the eggs on to the mix and add the ground pepper and red hot chili pepper flakes on top of the egg yolks and then close the lid. Cook about 10 minutes and then serve in the pan.
